Application

This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to accurately identify and report on a range of fire safety systems and equipment installed at client premises and their purpose and function. It applies to fire protection technicians who interact with clients to discuss fire protection service needs.

The unit is suitable for those with basic skills and knowledge undertaking routine work tasks under the direction of more experienced workers.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in some states and territories. For further information, check with the relevant regulatory authority.

Performance Evidence

To demonstrate competency, a candidate must meet the elements and performance criteria of this unit by identifying and reporting on the types of fire safety equipment and systems installed at two different sites.

Knowledge Evidence

To be competent in this unit, a candidate must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • purpose and range of Australian colour-coding system for portable and wheeled fire extinguishers, including pictographs
  • purpose, types and operation of:
  • automatic fire detection and alarm systems
  • automatic sprinkler alarm systems
  • delivery layflat fire hoses
  • emergency exits and lighting units and systems
  • fire and smoke door sets
  • fire blankets
  • fire hose reels
  • fire pumpsets
  • gaseous fire-suppression systems
  • intercom systems for emergency purposes
  • major components of fire hydrant systems
  • portable and wheeled fire extinguishers
  • pre-engineered fire-suppression systems
  • service penetration products
  • smoke and heat alarms
  • sound systems for emergency purposes.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must meet the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.

Assessment must be conducted in the workplace or a simulated workplace using realistic conditions, materials, activities, responsibilities, procedures, safety requirements and environmental considerations.

Candidates must have access to documentation, equipment, sites and installed fire safety systems and equipment required to achieve the performance evidence.
